La Seconde Guerre mondiale est le conflit le plus sanglant de l’Histoire avec plus 60 millions de morts dont 6 millions de juifs. Il n’est pas le seul fait de la crise économique des années 30, il trouve également ses origines dans la lente radicalisation politique qui émerge dès la fin de la Première Guerre mondiale avec notamment un jeune caporal d’origine autrichienne qui a combattu sur le front des Flandres sous le drapeau allemand et refuse la démobilisation. Il s’appelle Adolf Hitler et il a trente ans. De plus, cette guerre n’est pas seulement occidentale et ne concerne pas uniquement les grands vainqueurs précédents. De nombreux conflits satellites s’y rattachent. En 1931, à la suite de l’incident de Moukden, le Japon envahit la Mandchourie et constitue quelques temps plus tard un état fantoche, le Mandchoukouo. Le théâtre des opérations de la seconde guerre sino-japonaise, qui débute en juillet 1937, est intégré dès 1941 à ce que l’on appelle aujourd’hui la guerre du Pacifique. Comme dans un bon scénario, des alliances surprenantes voire impensables voient le jour dans ce contexte où une poignée d’hommes a le sort de l’humanité entre les mains ! Malheureusement, encore de nos jours, les conséquences de ses dissonances se font sentir. La guerre en Ukraine n’est-elle pas la traduction du désir d’un “dictateur” de reconstituer un empire disparu ?
Quelle aubaine pour tous les collégiens de France et de Navarre de pouvoir compulser cet ouvrage avant de passer leur diplôme national du brevet ! Car évidemment la Seconde Guerre mondiale y est au programme. Au-delà de cette considération, il s’agit également d’une chance pour un public beaucoup plus large que celui constitué uniquement par nos enfants. Il faut dire que le travail d’Arnaud De la Croix est remarquable et colossal en termes d’analyse et de synthèse de documentation pour être le plus pertinent et juste possible tout en essayant d’apporter des éléments moins connus du grand public sur le sujet. Le philosophe de formation et historien par passion réussit haut la main le défi fixé car sa présentation en vingt chapitres, qui sont autant de moment-clés, retrace parfaitement – et surtout de manière claire et intelligible – cette période on ne peut plus noire de notre Histoire. Mieux, le scénariste nous apprend des choses, comme cela a été le cas lors de la lecture de ses bandes dessinées sur la Franc-maçonnerie ou encore le Moyen Âge. S’immerger dans le récit d’une guerre, qui plus est la plus meurtrière, n’est pas du tout chose aisée. Grâce à la performance graphique de Vicente Cifuentes, car il s’agit bien là d’une performance, la plongée est totale. Sans artifice superflu mais avec une ligne claire réaliste et un noir et blanc des plus efficaces, le dessinateur ibérique nous porte, nous invite à le suivre. Le dessin, sans aucune fausse note, sert à merveille les propos développés.
Remarquable à tous les points de vue, cet ouvrage peut vite devenir une référence incontournable du genre !
