Fille de chambre au Palace Hotel de San Francisco, la jeune Judith se voit confier la suite d’Enrico Caruso, le célèbre ténor italien de passage en ville. Le chanteur profite d’une représentation pour convoyer clandestinement un tableau que des truands doivent récupérer. Malheureusement pour elle, Judith se retrouve au mauvais endroit au mauvais moment, mais elle parvient quand même à se tirer des pattes des mafieux en emmenant la toile. Une course-poursuite commence alors qu’un terrible événement va frapper la Californie…
« Payez bien, je veux retrouver la gamine cette nuit… tout doit être réglé cette nuit, c’est bien clair? La gamine… et ce putain de tableau! »
Comme à son habitude, Damien Marie mêle plusieurs histoires, cette fois au cœur d’un événement hors du commun qui fournit un contexte parfait à une telle intrigue. En faisant intervenir le grand tremblement de terre d’avril 1906 en fin de tome, il prend le temps de placer ses personnages dans un récit rocambolesque qui voit participer le légendaire chanteur d’opéra Enrico Caruso et d’autres personnalités réelles. Mieux encore, il ajoute l’existence d’un tableau qui apporte presque une touche de surnaturel aussi étonnante que bienvenue. Si on a connu Fabrice Meddour plus inspiré dans ses compositions et le dynamisme de ses planches, son dessin reste de très bonne facture et permet de se plonger avec délice dans cette époque fascinante. Son utilisation des couleurs fait encore sensation, aussi bien lors du drame que lors de chaque apparition du fameux tableau.
Une nouvelle belle collaboration entre deux auteurs complémentaires.
