Bordeaux, 26 mars 1909. Une petite Germaine pointe le bout de son nez. Et quel nez ! Dès l’âge de 12 ans, la jeune fille possède un odorat incroyable. Perspicace, elle comprend que l’avenir du parfum réside dans la chimie. A 15 ans, certificat d’études complémentaires en poche, elle s’inscrit à l’école Scientia à Auteuil où elle obtient son diplôme d’aide-chimiste à 16 ans et celui d’aide-bactériologiste à 17 ans. La jeune Germaine Cellier décide alors de poursuivre son rêve : créer des parfums ! Recrutée par la société Roure, Bertrand fils & Justin Dupont à Argenteuil, elle est chargée de vérifier la qualité olfactive des parfums. Très vite, son patron la remarque et choisit de miser sur son potentiel en la plaçant sous la responsabilité de Jean Carles, avec un objectif : la création de parfums pour les couturiers. Si pour lui il faut procéder avec méthode, pour Germaine, qui ne s’entend pas avec ce dernier, « un parfum, ça se fait d’instinct » ! Mondaine, elle rencontre un jour le couturier Robert Piguet pour lequel elle crée en 1944, avec l’aide de ses « cocottes », le célèbre parfum Bandit. Ce premier succès accroît sa renommée. Suivront d’autres chefs-d’œuvre olfactifs composés sur mesure pour de grands créateurs de mode : Élysée 64-83, Vent Vert, Jolie Madame pour Pierre Balmain, Cœur-Joie pour Nina Ricci, Fracas pour Robert Piguet, La Fuite des heures pour Balenciaga…

Dans cet album envoûtant tant narrativement qu’esthétiquement, les autrices nous présentent le parcours brillant, atypique et peu médiatisé du premier nez féminin français : Germaine Cellier. Époque oblige, il n’était pas aisé pour une femme de gravir les échelons. Cependant, Germaine Cellier a su s’imposer grâce à sa créativité, son franc-parler, son indépendance (elle ne s’est jamais mariée) et son caractère bien trempé qui s’exprime aussi dans les formules surprenantes et les noms choisis pour ses parfums. Le scénario didactique et très complet de Béatrice Egémar vulgarise avec brio les processus complexes de création et de fabrication des parfums : on apprend ainsi que le muguet ne peut pas être distillé, que les produits composés reproduisent les senteurs naturelles, que les parfums sont constitués de notes de tête, de cœur et de fond, etc. Ce roman graphique passionnant témoigne également du bouillonnement culturel parisien auquel a pris part Germaine Cellier : ses liaisons amoureuses avec le peintre Chas Laborde, l’illustrateur Jean Oberlé, puis le joueur de tennis Christian Boussus (rencontré en 1942 et avec lequel elle restera jusqu’à sa mort), les soirées mondaines en compagnie de personnalités issues des milieux de la presse, de la mode, des arts. Cette biographie contient également des informations très intéressantes sur le contexte historique qui s’étend de l’entre-deux-guerres jusqu’à l’après Seconde Guerre mondiale sans oublier l’Occupation : le manque d’essence, les tickets de rationnement, la vente de café pur interdit, la situation des Juifs, les bombardements. Cela permet de mieux comprendre les conditions dans lesquelles Germaine Cellier a conçu ses fragrances. Graphiquement, cet album est un bel objet, en atteste d’ailleurs la première de couverture très soignée mise en relief par le titre doré. Le dessin lumineux et expressif de Sandrine Revel rend visible l’invisible. Son trait précis, fin et délicatement coloré souligne le talent de Germaine Cellier qui « sent(ait) les choses » en faisant ressortir les yeux amandes tantôt grands ouverts, tantôt fermés et l’élégance de la parfumeuse. Mention spéciale à la planche quasi cinématographique en page 10 où Germaine Cellier, telle une James Bond Girl, se retourne les mains sur les hanches, vêtue d’un tailleur ultra classe, clope au bec, puis regarde le lecteur droit dans les yeux en lui lançant une réplique de manière affirmée ! En bonus, la scénariste a inséré une recette pour fabriquer une eau de Cologne avec le fameux galbanum de Vent Vert, une petite chronologie non exhaustive des parfums de Germaine et un glossaire autour du parfum.
Un magnifique hommage à une créatrice de parfums, injustement tombée dans l’oubli, qui a pourtant arraché aux hommes « le monopole du meilleur nez » !
