Janvier 1981, Paris, rue Victor Schoelcher, 14 heures. Deirdre Bair, biographe américaine, est reçue chez Simone de Beauvoir, qui entreprend de lui dévoiler les moments clefs de sa vie. Son éducation stricte et catholique dans une famille bourgeoise avec sa sœur Hélène surnommée Poupette. La privation de dot en raison de l’effondrement du patrimoine de la famille durant la Révolution d’octobre. Son entrée en rébellion avec la société patriarcale. Son désir de devenir immortelle en écrivant des livres. Son rejet de la religion en 1922 et ses interrogations sur la condition des femmes. Sa soif d’apprendre en suivant des études de philosophie après l’obtention de son baccalauréat en 1925. Son besoin de s’émanciper financièrement et intellectuellement couplé à son souhait d’enseigner. Sa réussite à l’agrégation en 1929. Son indépendance en s’installant dans une petite chambre à Paris. Son histoire d’ « amour nécessaire » avec Jean-Paul Sartre, cofondateur de la revue Les Temps modernes, basée sur la vérité et la liberté mais ne devant en aucun cas les empêcher de vivre des amours contingentes avec d’autres, en atteste sa liaison passionnée avec Nelson Algren, « son crocodile » américain. Sa carrière de romancière avec l’obtention du prix Goncourt en 1954 pour Les Mandarins. Sa participation au Mouvement de Libération des Femmes et son témoignage lors du procès de Michèle Chevalier, la mère de Marie-Claire, suite à la proposition de l’avocate Gisèle Halimi. Des événements de son existence sur lesquels elle s’étend et d’autres sur lesquels elle préfère garder le silence…

Cet album magnifique et bien documenté permet de découvrir la vie et les luttes de Simone de Beauvoir. Très instructif, il donne aussi envie de lire ses nombreux écrits : essais, romans, récits autobiographiques… Composé de quatre parties introduites par des citations extraites de ses œuvres, ce roman graphique explique de manière accessible et chronologique le cheminement de sa pensée en lien avec son parcours personnel et professionnel. Comme le montre la scénariste Julia Korbik, l’illustre femme de lettres et de conviction s’est interrogée depuis son « enfance nourrie de mythes forgés par les hommes », sur la dualité de l’être : « Devient-on ce que l’on est ? Ou bien est-on ? » mais également sur les rapports dominé/dominant entre les sexes ainsi que le droit des femmes à disposer librement d’elle-même et de leurs corps. Ses études de philosophie et le décès brutal de son amie Zaza ont d’ailleurs renforcé sa volonté de façonner sa vie selon ses propres règles. Féministe, le « Castor » n’a en effet eu de cesse de dénoncer la masculinité du monde et le fait que la place de la femme dans la société soit toujours celle que les hommes lui assignent. Pendant son voyage aux États-Unis en 1947, elle réalise qu’il n’est pas possible pour tout le monde, en particulier les femmes et les Noirs, de rejeter les valeurs, tabous et normes sociales environnantes. Aussi a-t-elle cherché à « combattre l’erreur, trouver la vérité, la dire, éclairer le monde. Peut-être même aider à le changer » avec ses livres qui ont aidé de nombreuses femmes à s’émanciper. L’illustratrice Julia Bernhard recourt à une sobre mise en couleur jaune/gris/blanc/noir et un décor minimaliste, très rectiligne afin de mettre en relief les personnages représentés tantôt de face ou tantôt sous formes d’ombres, selon l’importance de la scène. Son trait expressif met l’accent sur la mine renfrognée de Simone de Beauvoir qui n’entend jamais se résigner face aux injustices de la société. Le dessin animalier permet à Julia Bernhard de traduire de façon humoristique les réflexions de la célèbre écrivaine : les lapins qui copulent quand Simone de Beauvoir évoque ses « rêves impurs », la maman renard et ses petits fuyant à l’approche du mâle lorsqu’elle prend conscience de la domination de l’homme, le petit chien qui renifle le derrière d’un grand chien suite à la proposition de Sartre du pacte des amours contingentes. Mention spéciale aux gros plans sur certains objets significatifs pour la philosophe : les mains de Sartre sculptées dans son appartement, le livre d’Alfred Fouillée, etc. À la fin du récit, une frise met en parallèle sa vie avec les avancées des droits des femmes en France.
Un très bel album-hommage sur Simone de Beauvoir et ses combats toujours d’actualité !
