Juin 1960, Spring Falls City. La jeune Melany pense fuguer avec Simon à Hollywood pour débuter une carrière d’actrice, mais elle déchante en voyant son amoureux partir en voiture avec une autre. Elle essaie quand même en auto-stop mais est arrêtée par le shérif local… 1990. Un violent trafic d’armes est en place. La jeune Rubine arrive sur place et se retrouve arrêtée en possession de cannabis, ce qui lui vaut une condamnation de 200 heures de travail d’intérêt public. Elle purge sa peine à la ferme de Matt Raleigh où elle fait la connaissance d’une autre condamnée, Jamie-Lee, une jolie blonde dont le charme ne laisse pas insensible la rouquine, bien au contraire. Mais une fois la nuit tombée, elles découvrent que les activités qui règnent dans cette ferme s’éloignent beaucoup de l’agriculture.
À l’image d’autres séries policières, Rubine se replonge à l’époque de ses débuts, la décennie 1990. Pour le scénariste Mythic, c’est l’occasion de révéler les origines de son héroïne avant qu’elle n’intègre la police de Chicago. Le dessin de Nicolas Van de Walle peut surprendre car il est bien différent de celui de François Wathéry, mais il s’agit d’un style graphique trouvant le bon intermédiaire entre le créateur du personnage et le premier dessinateur de la série, Dragan de Lazare, un dessin plaisant mettant en valeur le récit mais aussi Rubine et Jamie-Lee. De plus, il ne faut pas oublier la base de la série : une aventure « policière », à mettre entre guillemets puisqu’elle n’est pas encore policière, avec ses rebondissements.
Une enquête plaisante à lire et dans laquelle on se laisse happer jusqu’au dénouement.
