1er août 1936, Berlin. Lors d’un trajet en taxi, le journaliste Edgar Pirolu raconte à un collègue la quête laborieuse du baron Pierre de Coubertin pour rétablir les Jeux Olympiques. Féru de sports, pratiquant la boxe, l’escrime, l’équitation et l’aviron, Coubertin annonça en 1894 la création du Comité International Olympique devant organiser les Jeux tous les quatre ans dans une ville différente. Il milita aussi pour introduire, comme en Angleterre, le sport dans les études à une époque où celui-ci était assimilé en France à du temps perdu. Toute sa vie, Pierre de Coubertin a poursuivi un objectif pacifiste et universaliste : des rencontres sportives internationales à la place de la guerre !

Cet album très instructif dresse le portrait sans concession d’un homme certes illustre et courageux mais pétri de paradoxes : Pierre de Coubertin. D’un côté, ce précurseur a sacrifié santé et argent pour faire triompher l’olympisme et la pédagogie. Cet aristocrate converti à la République était persuadé que la paix pouvait être établie par l’éducation (sportive) de la jeunesse. Il s’est heurté à beaucoup d’oppositions d’ordre budgétaire et (géo)politique : le coût, l’impossibilité de faire concourir des sportifs de pays en guerre, etc. De l’autre côté, un homme de son temps, rétrograde, admirateur d’Hitler, qui a dirigé d’une main de fer le CIO jusqu’en 1925 et a terminé sa vie seul et écarté. Colonialiste et misogyne, il ne souhaitait pas que les athlètes de couleur et les femmes participent aux Jeux. Didactique et fluide, l’album révèle pléthore d’anecdotes/informations sur les différents JO : Athènes (suspicions de triches), Saint-Louis (diplômes remplacés par des médailles d’or, argent et bronze), Londres (défilé des athlètes en tenue de sport derrière les bannières internationales, distance du marathon établie à 42,195 km), Amsterdam (ouverture d’épreuves d’athlétisme aux femmes), l’exclusion de l’Allemagne durant les jeux de 1920 et 1924. En début d’album, les auteurs reviennent sur les origines des JO en Grèce jusqu’à la fin des Jeux en 393 sous Théodose Ier, dans une jolie mise en couleur sepia.
