Au terme d’un long combat, Masaki Izawa, « la légende de la rue », met KO Yû d’un coup décisif et décide de l’emmener chez lui. Contrairement à ce que pense Shin, il ne cherche pas à « finir » son adversaire mais à lui éviter les représailles éventuelles de bandes rivales qui observaient l’affrontement. Alors qu’il le soigne, Yû remarque une fine cicatrice sur le poignet gauche de celui qu’il considère comme son mentor. Il comprend alors que ce dernier a fait une tentative de suicide. Bouleversé, Yû quitte l’appartement et continue de traîner la nuit en ville. La petite sœur de Masaki, Mai, veille cependant sur lui et parvient à le convaincre de retourner au lycée. Renouant avec Shin, Yû réalise alors que « personne ne peut se faire une place dans ce monde en étant seul », d’autant plus quand les gangs rivaux, profitant de sa faiblesse actuelle, décident de se venger…
« Comment ça se fait, Masaki? Comment es-tu capable d’aider quelqu’un d’autre que toi alors tu as connu une telle peine? »
En dix chapitres, ce sixième volume du seinen Holyland marque un tournant dans l’intrigue puisque le personnage de Yû, moralement et physiquement diminué à l’issue de ce duel, enchaîne dorénavant les échecs cuisants. Kouji Mori souligne à quel point Yû et son mentor Masaki se ressemblent puisque tous deux sont pétris de doutes, ont des tendances suicidaires et restent énigmatiques. Le personnage féminin de Mai, bienveillante et ange gardien, s’inquiète à juste titre sur la santé mentale de Yû : ses paroles font prendre conscience à Yû qu’il a besoin de ses amis pour se réinsérer. Grâce aux conseils d’Iwado, il comprend également qu’il doit corriger sa posture de combat et qu’il ne doit pas redevenir une victime s’il veut être en mesure de protéger ses amis. Graphiquement, le mangaka déploie un trait nerveux et finement détaillé tant dans les lieux que dans les gestes et expressions faciales de ses personnages. Il insuffle dans ses planches un dynamisme qui se traduit par des gros plans et des arrêts sur images mettant en relief les réactions et la technicité des différents protagonistes. Il insère aussi des schémas explicatifs qui permettent de distinguer, lors des rixes, les coups portés (crochets, directs du droit) ainsi que leurs conséquences (nausées, frissons, perte de connaissance). Les incursions introspectives et narratives de l’auteur apportent des informations complémentaires à l’intrigue : on apprend ainsi que la colère prépare psychologiquement à blesser le concurrent et accélère la prise de décision qui constitue la règle absolue dans une bagarre. Ce manga délivre un enseignement intéressant sur la vie des jeunes en société et sur les arts martiaux avec notamment l’analyse de Tsuchiya sur l’importance du terrain et la place de la lutte au sein des sports de combat. Mention spéciale à la réflexion introductive du mangaka sur la jaquette interne qui encourage à transformer la blessure en force afin de faciliter la guérison.
Un sixième tome dans la lignée des précédents : addictif et instructif !
