Jeune journaliste, Gabriel Joly vise mieux que les critiques de pièces de théâtre qu’il rédige pour le Journal de Paris. Aussi aime-t-il fouiner dans des affaires plus sombres et mystérieuses, tels ces crimes affreux qui ensanglantent les rues de la capitale depuis peu. En s’emparant de la série de romans écrits par Henri Loevenbruck, Philippe Thirault en tire une bande dessinée palpitante, parfaitement découpée et rythmée, qui captive autant qu’elle fascine. Il faudra juste que les lecteurs soient bien conscients que l’aventure sera à suivre, puisque le personnage de Gabriel Joly est le héros de plusieurs romans dont l’action se suit, ce qui n’est pas clairement explicité sur la couverture. L’histoire est d’ailleurs suffisamment plaisante et bien construite pour qu’on attende le reste avec impatience. Car, si le scénariste reprend fidèlement la trame des ouvrages, Damien Jacob donne à cet album une belle intensité, renforcée par une colorisation franche et sans effets superflus qui lui donne un ton marquant. Le dessinateur, déjà excellent sur toutes ses autres productions (depuis Les Fées noires jusqu’à Soleil froid, en passant par Arcane majeur), réussit une nouvelle prestation de haute volée.
Un premier tome particulièrement réussi par sa fidèle adaptation et un style graphique formidable.
