Alors que Cole, ivre, se tire indemne d’un accident de la route, Austin avoue à son ex-copine Priti (et sœur de Cole) qu’il est en couple depuis deux mois avec Ambre. Priti accuse durement le choc de cette nouvelle même si l’attirance qu’elle éprouve envers Liam s’affirme de plus en plus nettement. Cependant, elle ne veut pas précipiter les choses afin de ne pas utiliser Liam comme « pansement d’Austin ». Après avoir raccompagné Priti et Cole chez eux, Liam, qui a perçu le mal-être de Cole, lui demande ce qui s’est passé lors du week-end d’intégration. Pendant ce temps, Aron et Ilouha vont boire un verre ensemble, Sam et Liv s’obstinent à ne pas s’avouer leurs sentiments, Cole reprend contact avec le beau Lukas, le père de Liam frappe à la porte de son fils… Les langues se délient pour (annoncer) le meilleur et le pire mais cela permettra-t-il à ces jeunes adultes en devenir de surmonter les blessures profondes du passé ?
« Tu sais très bien que si tu as besoin d’aide, il y aura toujours des gens qui seront là pour toi. Moi, je serai là pour toi. »
Because I can’t love you continue sur sa très bonne lancée tant sur le plan graphique que scénaristique. L’autrice met en scène une mosaïque de personnages attachants aux caractères très différents et entrelace avec brio leurs histoires d’amour ainsi que les drames, plus ou moins graves, qui jalonnent leurs vies d’étudiants. Si ce webtoon touche autant, c’est avant tout parce qu’elle aborde avec justesse des thématiques d’actualité qui impactent l’héroïne Priti, ses amis étudiants et ses proches : agressions sexuelles, homosexualité, deuil d’un amour, troubles du comportement alimentaire, partage de photos intimes sur les réseaux sociaux, maltraitance familiale, crainte de s’engager dans une relation, popularité… Elle insère également des scènes cocasses qui prêtent à sourire : les jeux de regard entre Priti et Liam surpris par Austin, le passage du parapluie retourné, les références à Molière, les private jokes, les moments où Priti avoue sans le vouloir ses sentiments à Liam… Le trait expressif de Lief révèle les émotions de Priti et de sa bande (détresse, colère, gêne, honte) à travers des gros plans sur les larmes, les joues rouges, les yeux baissés. L’humour est aussi de la partie avec la présence abondante d’onomatopées et la représentation caricaturale des protagonistes. Le dessin délicat et épuré, avec de jolis aplats de nuances douces, comporte également des passages difficiles comme la planche noire montrant la confrontation entre Liam et son père.
Un troisième volume dans la lignée des précédents : addictif et terriblement prenant !
